2009 Mazda RX-8 Clutch and Flywheel Replacement
The Car:
HPMotors believes the RX-8 is a great car that is more misunderstood than actually bad. With knowledgeable care and maintenance they can prove to be quite reliable. We go into more detail in this article, but they're a vehicle worth checking out. This series 2 RX-8 appears largely the same as the series 1 discussed in that article, but there are a few noticeable changes done mostly to improve reliability even further. Probably the most notable difference would be electric oil pump metering (used for the first time on any Mazda rotary), and revised oil injection design. However, like most model updates from most manufacturers the list of actual changes is quite extensive. |
The Problem:
This particular RX-8 called with complaints of poor throttle response and power delivery. The description originally indicated possible ignition issues, engine health issues, or a bad catalytic converter. However, on arrival it was clear the clutch had been badly burned and damaged from the smell. With a quick and easy diagnosis, it's time to get to work. The Repair:
Well, if there was any doubt, there isn't anymore. It's definitely a failed clutch kit, and the worst we've ever seen. A failure like this is rarely a part issue, and is almost always caused by an error in operation. This can be avoided by learning to quickly and smoothly engage the clutch when accelerating from a stop. This is an extreme example of what happens when the clutch is slipped and heat cycled far too much. On top of an upgraded clutch kit, we will be replacing the flywheel instead of resurfacing it. The rear main seal, pilot bearing with seal, and throw out bearing will also be replaced. We'll also try and clean up some of this excessive clutch dust on the engine and transmission. So that's a wrap, and the test drive felt great. These really are fantastic driving cars, and a lot of fun. It's a shame they didn't earn a better reputation, but that means good ones can be found for reasonable prices. If you're in the market for a sports car with a little extra space, the series 2 RX-8 with a 6-port engine and manual transmission is a fine option.
